West Michigan Middle School Conference Tournament

The first tournament of the year was at Sparta and was against some tough competition. There were 16 middle school teams at the meet. Hastings brought home the 1st place  trophy, and had six wrestlers go 4 - 0 for the day.

Hastings defeated East Grand Rapids in the first round 108 - 0. In round two they met Forest Hills Central, and picked up another win 72 - 24. In the semi-finals round, Hastings went up against a tough Newhall team, and ended up with a 57 - 51 win.

In the finals, Hastings wrestled a very tough Lowell team. About halfway through, the team was down 27 - 45, but wrestled tough to come back for a 51 - 50 win to finish in 1st place for the day.

The team will wrestle against Allegan and Newhall this week at home.

Saxon Wrestlers Dual Meet Opener

Saxon wrestlers had their first home meet for the year, hosting Delton and Comstock. The Saxon Gold team picked up two wins for the night, and the Blue Team went 1 - 1.

The Gold team wrestled Delton to start off the night and picked up a 78 - 30 win. In the second match of the night, Saxon Gold defeated Comstock 96 - 6.

The Blue team wrestled Comstock in their first match and picked up a 64 - 33 win. Blue team lost a close one, when they wreslted Delton during the second match, and finished with a final score of 44 - 54.

The Saxon Wrestlers will travel to Sparta on Saturday for their first team tournament.

Wrestling Season 2010


Well it is now time for wrestling season! Practice for the HMS team started a couple of weeks ago, and they are looking for their first meet on Tuesday, February 2nd at the Hastings Middle School - 4:15 pm. The Gold and the Blue teams will both be wrestling against Delton and Comstock.

Game 7 - Hastings vs. Leslie


In the last game of the year, the Saxon Gold team defeated Leslie 29 – 8. The Gold defense shut down the Leslie team after the first quarter, holding them to one TD for the night. Leading the team on defense was Jason Slaughter with 5 tackles; Adam Post and Evan Hart both picked up 3 each for the night; and, Ben Herbstreith, Logan Gray, Ryan Johnston, and Travis Hoffman each had 2 a piece. Picking up solo tackles for the team were: Mike Johnston, Jake Zimmerman, and Richard Barbee. Draven Pederson picked off two Blackhawk passes and Herbstreith picked off another one, to make three Saxon interceptions for the night.


The Saxon offense, behind lineman: R. Johnston, Hoffman, Jaleel Richardson, Jared Bailey, Zach Carpenter, Post, and Austin Clow, rushed for over 200 yards and 77 yards passing to put 29 points on the home scoreboard. Slaughter rushed for 65 yards, had two touchdowns and one extra point; Hart picked up another 63 yards rushing; while M. Johnston picked up 43 yards and another Saxon touchdown and one extra point for the team. Pederson ran for 29 yards; Hoffman had 8 rushing yards, and Herbstreith and Caleb Engle both picked up 6 yards rushing for the night. Post scored another Saxon touchdown on a 50 yard TD pass from Slaughter. Post had a total of two catches with 76 yards for the team. Zach Carpenter kicked one extra point in for the team.

Game 6 - Hastings vs. Caledonia

Unfortunately, last weeks game against Caledonia/Kraft Meadows was cancelled due to the outbreak of the flu in Hastings and the surrounding communities. At this time, the games have not been rescheduled.

The last game of the season against Leslie will be played at Hastings on October 28th.

Game 5 - Hastings vs. Rogers

The 7th Grade Gold team defeated Rogers 26 - 0 last Wednesday. The team had a strong defensive game with multiple tackles by Ryan Johnston, Mike Johnston, Draven Pederson, Jake Zimmerman, Zach DeJong, Travis Hoffman, Owen Post, Richard Barbee, Logan Gray, Caleb Engle, Austin Clow and Kelton Peabody. On the Saxon defense, Pederson also picked off a pass and picked up a fumble recovery; Engle and R. Johnston also both picked up fumble for the team.

The Saxon offense was led by Evan Hart who scored two of the Saxon touchdowns and had 108 yards rushing for the day. Pederson picked up another 85 yards rushing and one Saxon score, while M. Johnston had the other Saxon touchdown and 21 yards rushing for the day. Zach Carpenter kicked one extra point for the team.
